"In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me. Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength." Psalm 31:1-4
Often we do not realize the ways God is working to protect us, but He is always there even when we do not see Him
A story was told of one Ira Sankey. He was often asked to sing as he traveled because of his association with D. L. Moody and their revival campaigns. In 1875, as Sankey traveled home for Christmas on a steamboat, passengers asked if he would sing. Sankey chose not one of his own songs, but the hymn “Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us" by William Bradbury. When he finished singing, a man in the crowd asked if Sankey had served in the Civil War as part of the Union Army, and he replied that he had. The man asked if Sankey remembered singing that same song one evening in 1862 while on guard duty. When Sankey confirmed it, the man said he had heard Sankey sing it that night—only that he was a Confederate soldier about to shoot the Union soldier he could see standing guard. But when Sankey began singing, the Confederate solder listened instead of shooting. He told Sankey, “Those words stirred up many memories. I began to think of my childhood and my God-fearing mother. She had many times sung that song to me. When you had finished your song, it was impossible for me to take aim again.”
God is our protection and deliverer, even when we are not aware of His hand at work. When we are in trouble or distress, or when we face danger, we have a consistent source of help. With Him on our side, the trials of life do not have to make us afraid. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea” (Psalm 46:1-2). Our God is able to work in ways beyond our understanding to accomplish His purposes in our lives.
